Scottsdale, Arizona's Austin Crane (8 years old), was one of three young siblings hospitalized in critical condition at Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego, following a light-plane crash on August 2nd in Tierrasanta. The crash killed their mother upon impact. Unfortunately, Austin was pronounced brain dead on August 4th. He is being kept alive on life support awaiting organ donation.
According to broadcast reports, Austin's sisters and father, who was also critically injured in the crash, remain hospitalized.
Pilot Gregory Crane, the children's father, had flown to San Diego to pick up his wife, two daughters, and Austin, who had been visiting family. Mr. Crane's home-built single-engine Velocity Super XLRG5 airplane went down at approximately 1:00 p.m. near the 11th hole of Admiral Baker Golf Course - a military golf course east of Interstate 15 in San Diego.
Soon after taking off from Montgomery Field airport about 12:45 p.m., Gregory radioed the airport tower to report that a door on the plane had fallen off and he was heading back to the Kearny Mesa airport to make an emergency landing. Flight controllers lost contact with him, and then the airplane crash was reported moments later. The plane's door was found in a ravine near Santo Road, which is about one- half-mile west of the northwestern edge of the golf course.
Small Plane Crashes Occurring In California
According to 10News, since 1960, there are very few days when a general aviation plane has not been involved in a crash. In July 2010, there were four small-plane or general aviation crashes in California, and 64 crashes throughout the U.S. The National Transportation Safety Board indicates that four crashes in one month is typical.
Plane Crash Liability Issues
